Set against the stunning backdrop of Southern California’s desert landscape, this state-of-the-art facility hosts prestigious dressage and hunter jumper events from October through March. With beautiful desert scenery and top-tier competition, DIHP is a must-visit for equestrians and enthusiasts alike.

Where is Desert International Horse Park?

DIHP is located in Thermal, California, near unique destinations like La Quinta, Coachella, and Palm Springs. With facilities that span almost 1.6 million square feet, DIHP is surrounded by mountains and sprinkled with palm trees, making it one of the largest and most picturesque horse parks in North America. Thermal is a resort-style community with warm weather year-round, making DIHP a vacation destination as well as a place to compete.

What is it like to compete at Desert International Horse Park?

Equestrian’s guide to Desert International Horse Park

Whether you’re competing, supporting a loved one, or simply soaking in the equestrian atmosphere, arriving at DIHP well-prepared can make all the difference. In this section, we’ll guide you through all the essential details to help ensure your experience is as smooth, enjoyable, and memorable as possible. From logistics to event details, here’s everything you need to know before planning your visit to DIHP.

Parking and check-in

When you arrive, the DIHP staff will direct you to park in a designated parking area where you’ll receive a visitor wristband and guide. Unless you’re directed to enter through the main entrance for a special event, you should enter the facility through the stabling gate. Parking and admission are free, so no need to worry about reserving a spot ahead of time.

However, each guest needs to be credentialed before entering, so it’s a good idea to submit required documents online in advance. You can pick up your ID badge at the main gate or show entrance when you arrive, then keep it with you when you’re on DIHP property. This badge is good for the remainder of the season.

Horse care

When traveling with your horse, their comfort and care is your top priority. DIHP offers stalls for seasonal or weekly reservations, each equipped with mats to keep your horse comfortable. If you’re planning to compete at DIHP, you can reserve a stall by email anytime between August 15th and October 1st.

In addition to convenient stabling options, DIHP provides on-site farrier and veterinary services, eliminating the stress of finding emergency care nearby. The park also takes biosecurity seriously, implementing strict practices to protect the health of all visiting horses. From the moment your horse steps onto the grounds, the DIHP team is dedicated to ensuring his well-being and safety.

The show ring

As one of the largest horse parks in North America, it’s no surprise that DIHP has 14 competition and schooling rings, including a dedicated Grand Prix arena with its own warm-up area. Each ring offers stunning desert views, creating an incredible atmosphere for both competitors and spectators.

Although most show rings are located within the same area, getting from one ring to the next can involve quite a bit of walking. R.J. Classics Sponsored Rider Katie Taylor-Davidson of Begonia Farms advises, “Get a bike or golf cart. The facilities are very large, and your feet will thank you!” DIHP conveniently offers golf cart rentals, as well as a complimentary shuttle service available by call or text, allowing visitors to easily navigate the expansive grounds.

Participating in events

DIHP hosts several hunter jumper and dressage competitions from October through March. Every year, dressage riders compete at Desert Dressage, and hunters and jumpers participate in the National Sunshine Series, Desert Holiday, and Desert Circuit. These competitions are a great opportunity for participants to test their skills against great riders from all over the country and world.

As a frequent competitor at DIHP, Taylor-Davidson’s favorite part about showing there is the great trails surrounding the facility. Her sister, R.J. Sponsored Rider Jamie Taylor of JT Equine, also appreciates the ability to escape the hustle and bustle of the show: “The horses love the trails, and I always enjoy riding them as a change of scenery.”

Where to eat

When it’s time to eat, DIHP offers a variety of quality restaurants to choose from. From burgers to tacos to salads, there’s something for everyone. Katie Taylor-Davidson says she especially loves The Poke Ranch, known for their custom poke bowls. When it comes to eating off-property, she and her sister both recommend food in the La Quinta area. But Jamie awards the best food spot near DIHP to Cork and Fork in Indio, CA.

Best places to stay nearby

DIHP is partnered with several hotels in the area, as well as RV rental companies. With RV facilities in close proximity to the stables, renting an RV is a convenient way to stay on-site while keeping an eye on your horse. If you’re looking for a more spacious place to stay, Airbnb is another great resource for finding nearby accommodations. “La Quinta is my favorite place to stay,” Katie Taylor-Davidson shares. “I especially love to find a rental house if possible since we’re normally there for multiple weeks in a row.”

What to expect at events

During the season, DIHP hosts several classes throughout the day from Wednesday through Sunday. Most Saturday evenings, they offer top-level national and international classes up to the CSI5* level in the Grand Prix Arena, which boasts an exciting atmosphere under the lights. Jamie Taylor recommends: “Take your time to hang out and watch the warm-up rings. People from all over the world visit DIHP, and you can learn a lot just by watching.”

When asked which events she likes to attend, Jamie said, “I love watching the Major League Show Jumping classes! They are such a pinnacle of the sport and to watch so many top athletes compete as teams in a different format is a lot of fun!” As a hunter rider, Katie Taylor-Davidson enjoys watching the World Champion Hunter Rider (WCHR) Spectacular class, adding, “It’s a very special class for us Hunter riders and provides a change of pace for spectators that come to watch the big jumper classes at night.”

Weather and what to wear

Even in the winter months, Thermal weather is warm and sunny during the days, but temperatures do cool down at night. It’s best to pack layers, as well as sunscreen and a hat for protection from the desert sun and a lightweight scarf or neck gaiter to keep the dust off your face. Also, opt for supportive walking shoes that will keep you comfortable as you explore the large facility.

When it comes to choosing outfits for DIHP, layers are truly key. As Katie Taylor-Davidson puts it, “All of my R.J. clothes work perfectly at DIHP. You will be cold and hot all in one day there, so you need all the layers R.J. has to offer!” For competing, Jamie Taylor loves R.J. show shirts because “they’re so lightweight and help you stay cool when it gets hot”. R.J. Classics designs equestrian clothing with comfort and performance in mind, using UV protective, moisture-wicking fabric that’s lightweight, cooling, and easy to layer.

From schooling shirts that protect you from the desert sun to cozy sweaters and vests for those cooler evenings, shop R.J. Classics to find all the perfect layers for your visit to DIHP.
